The television is fine on paper and disappointing in the room. Paper is easy. That gap is the subject here. We write about what a thing is like to live with once the box is gone and nobody in the house cares what the panel type is called.

What you get here

• World Icon has been running since 2008 and is still publishing. There are more than 600 articles here to look through.
• Nothing here is written from a press pack. We live with the thing, get the settings wrong for a fortnight, and then say what it is like. The site is funded by advertising and sponsored placement, and paid links are labelled as paid. A brand can be visible here and cannot be flattered here on request.
• The questions are the ones asked from the sofa. Why does this film look wrong on a television that reviewed well. Is a soundbar enough. Does the car screen get better with an update, or is this as good as it gets.
• We think specifications are the wrong place to start. That is an argument rather than a neutral view, and the pieces here are written as one.
• Follow along and you learn to judge a thing by what it does in a normal room with normal light and a family talking over it. You buy fewer things twice.

How we work

We keep things far longer than a review cycle. A television, a car, a speaker, whatever it is, it stays here until we know what it is like in the second year rather than the second week. Then we write the piece.

A spec sheet describes a product, and a room tells you if you should have bought it.
